The Celtel African subsidiaries will re-brand to Zain starting today, 1st August 2008. Zain is the Celtel’s Kuwait based parent company. This is all in line with their goal of re-branding all the group’s holdings around the world under one brand name.

The mobile phone company was launched in Kenya in the year 2000 as Kencell with the brand YES! Sameer Group was part owner but Vivendi Telecom International held the controlling interest. In 2004 Celtel International bought out Vivendi Telecom International and immediately re-branded it Celtel Kenya.
I do hope that this time they shall maintain the brand name and try, for their own sake to become more visible with their promotions. They do have some fabulous tariffs and offers but day by day it is astounding that there are so many people I meet who have no clue about what they have on offer. In my opinion, they have the better product in Kenya, as compared to their main competitor Safaricom, letting the public know that they do might just be the turn of speed they need to get out from under the shadow of their current competition and the stiffer race just a month away with the launch of Orange Kenya.

Its amazing that people don’t know that Celtel….sorry Zain charge less than a 1/3 of what Safaricom charge offpeak.
The brand of Kencell, celtel,Zain has just refused to entrench itself in Kenya. Changing tariffs every other day is not a plan. Plus the attachment of people to their numbers. Safaricom is so on our face, now with MPesa, it’s will be everhard for people to make the big switch that was witness circa 2000 from Kencell to safaricom.
